The SSF3 Joint Peace Initiative (JPI) was officially launched on January 27, 2026, marking an important milestone in the continuation of peacebuilding efforts in Galkacyo. The launch ceremony was held at Aljazerra Hotel in Galkacyo North, Puntland State of Somalia.
The event brought together senior representatives from the Puntland and Galmudug administrations, local government officials, peace committees, and implementing partners. Their participation underscored a shared commitment to strengthening peace, stability, and social cohesion in the region.
The primary objective of the launch was to reinforce peacebuilding efforts, promote community integration, and enhance cooperation between authorities and local communities. Special emphasis was placed on ensuring that all stakeholders clearly understood the objectives of SSF3, its implementation timeline, and their respective roles and responsibilities in sustaining peace initiatives.
During the session, local government representatives commended CPD and PSA for their continued and visible contributions to advancing peace and stability in Galkacyo. They emphasized the importance of sustaining and expanding effective peace projects that promote coexistence and long-term harmony among communities.
Mr. Beddal Liban, Deputy Governor of Mudug Region (Galmudug), highlighted the tangible peace milestones achieved through the Joint Peace Initiative. He attributed much of the success to the leadership and dedication of traditional elders, noting their critical role in protecting young men at risk of conflict-related violence. He concluded by strongly advocating for increased federal-level investment in peacebuilding efforts in Mudug Region.
Mr. Abdirahman Sheikh Hassan, Mayor of Galkacyo (Galmudug), expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, with special recognition of the Ministries of Interior of Puntland and Galmudug and the Somali Stability Fund (SSF). He highlighted the visible peace dividends, including road infrastructure development and street lighting, which have significantly reduced mobile phone robberies in Galkacyo. He also emphasized the importance of support to peace structures across Puntland and Galmudug. The Mayor noted that Phase I of the project was highly participatory and stressed the need to apply lessons learned to enhance the effectiveness of Phase II.
Ms. Sarah Kim, Conflict Conciliation and Climate Advisor for the Somali Stability Fund (SSF), stated:
“We are here today to celebrate the work you have already done and the work we will continue to do. The efforts you have been deeply involved in over the past few years are absolutely critical to peacebuilding and stability. It is inspiring to witness your commitment, and I am honored to join you.”
Representatives further reaffirmed the full commitment of the Galkacyo District Local Government to work closely with SSF and CPD in implementing peace initiatives. They highlighted the importance of strong collaboration to achieve sustainable and inclusive outcomes that benefit all residents of the district.
Overall, the launch session served as a platform to align stakeholders, reinforce shared ownership, and renew collective responsibility for the successful continuation of SSF-supported peacebuilding efforts.
The project launch was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Democratization of Puntland State and formally closed by the Deputy Minister of Galmudug. The event was officially witnessed by representatives from SSF and CARE Somalia.
