The Centre for Peace and Democracy (CPD), in collaboration with the Gaalkacyo Mayor’s Office, successfully wrapped up the Peacebuilding Football Tournament in Mudug Region on Sunday, July 20, 2025. Designed to unite communities and promote peaceful coexistence, the event drew vibrant participation from youth teams across Galmudug and Puntland States.
For several days, the tournament fostered spirited interaction, culminating in a thrilling final match between Comsed FC and Horseed FC. With over 2,000 spectators cheering from both administrations, Horseed FC claimed victory in dramatic fashion after penalty kicks.
The Governor of Mudug, Feisal Jufo Jabsade, lauded the tournament’s impact: “These games are a vital platform for promoting peacebuilding and strengthening unity between the two regions, Sports are a powerful tool for social integration, peace, and hope for lasting harmony.”
Ahmed Abdi Elmi, Head of Sports in Gaalkacyo, echoed this sentiment: “As you can see today, this final match has attracted an audience of at least 2,000 people from both Galmudug and Puntland. It is a testament to how sports can unite communities.”
The closing ceremony, attended by officials from both regional governments, reinforced the shared commitment to peace and development. Deputy Mayor Eng. Mohamed Abdi Elmi praised the athletes and organizers, highlighting the tournament as a bridge for genuine inter-community interaction.
This initiative was part of the SSF 3 project and generously supported by the Somalia Stability Fund (SSF), reflecting CPD’s ongoing dedication to peace building, dialogue, and inclusive progress across Somalia.
