Galmudug State is one of Somalia’s regions that has faced a deepening climate crisis in the form of recurrent droughts that has depleted pasture and the traditional water sources resulting in the displacement of about 600,000 people internally, while affecting both lives and livelihoods.These shocks are attributed to the impact of climate change which adversely resulted environmental and natural resource degradation.
CPD in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is implementing Climate-resilient WASH and Livelihoods Package for Resilient Somali Landscapes project which aims at strengthening livelihoods and resilience of vulnerable agrarian and agro-pastoralist communities through protection and restoration of key natural resources and WASH services in pastoral, agro-pastoral and agrarian areas through community-led actions that will improve market access for key rural value chains.
The project intends to strengthen the livelihoods of 25,434 people in Dhusamareb and Adado districts in Galmudug state through the restoration and stabilisation of agrarian, pastoral, and agro-pastoral areas while 87,744 people will have access to improved WASH services with women’s active participation remaining an important.
As part of the initial project implementation processes, CPD is currently engaged in a series of community mobilisation and engagement initiatives that’s aimed at the community identifying and setting up of protected sites for regeneration of natural resources and farm field schools in Dhusamareb and Adado districts rural villages. In this project, community participation as key stakeholder in the implementation process is important and will always take the leading role.
