Empowering Women Leaders: A Milestone Achievement by CPD
The BRCiS III project, implemented by the Centre for Peace and Democracy (CPD) in partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), has significantly improved women’s participation in community decision-making in Galmudug State, Somalia.
Through continuous engagement and discussions advocating for equity, women now play crucial roles in top leadership positions within Community Resilience Committees (CRCs) and other community structures like Water Management Committees, Natural Resource Management Committees, and Early Warning Early Action Committees.

Women are actively shaping the decision-making process by participating in Community Action Plans (CAP), community contingency plans, and training on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) and Complaints and Response Mechanisms (CRM).
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, CPD honors these achievements and reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable community development.

Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Landscape Restoration for a Greener Somalia
Women’s leadership is driving sustainable development, particularly in our ongoing “Seedbombs” project in Adado and Dhusamareb districts. Funded by WHH, this initiative sees women taking on critical roles in restoring degraded lands.
Remarkably, in Dhumoodle (Adado) and Faragoy (Dhusamareb), Xakiimo Yussuf Mohamed and Sahro Isse Ali lead as secretaries within the landscape restoration committees (LRCs). On International Women’s Day, we celebrate these women’s contributions to environmental conservation and community resilience.

Their dedication highlights the importance of women’s participation in decision-making, ensuring inclusive, effective, and community-driven restoration efforts.
Recently, these leaders, alongside other LRCs, received training to enhance their capacity in sustainable land management and conflict resolution. This empowerment enables them to tackle soil degradation, tree regeneration, water conservation, and community disputes.
Their leadership strengthens restoration efforts, proving that when women are empowered, entire communities benefit. Their active participation inspires other women to take on leadership roles in environmental conservation and community development.
