Baardheere is one of the districts that experienced the worst impact of the El Niño floods caused by the Jubba river, which flooded and submerged large areas of land. The floods damaged roads, bridges, swamping farmland, and thereby restricting access to towns and settlements. Extreme weather events and conflict have caused families to leave their homes in search for safety and survival across Somalia. Many IDPs live in overcrowded camps or settlements with inadequate access to clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and education. Living conditions are often precarious, exacerbating the vulnerability of displaced families, particularly women, children, and the elderly. Recurring droughts and food insecurity, disproportionately affects IDPs and host communities. Somalia continues to face a multi-faceted humanitarian crisis that has compounded with conflicts and violence across the country. Approximately 3.4 million people in Somalia are likely to face Crisis—IPC 3—or worse levels of food insecurity between April and June 2024 despite improved food security outcomes. Additionally, IPC reports that 1.7 million children ages 6–59 months will likely experience acute malnutrition during 2024. The recurrent and alternating floods and droughts coupled with frequent security crises created new internal displacements or worsen the plight of those who were already displaced in the region. Continued droughts and dry spells reduced rainfall based recharge of traditional wells and surface water sources, and the lack of water from seasonal sources forced rural people to migrate to urban and pre-urban settlements.For that reason, the water supply situation in the region largely remained poor, particularly in rural areas where women and children travel long distances to fetch water for both domestic and livestock use during the dry seasons. A consortium of CPD and PSA with the support of SSF funding implemented Galkayo joint peace initiatives with the objective of promoting peace in Galkayo town and South Mudug villages, covering north and South Galkayo administered by Puntland and Galmudug States respectively under the Joint Peace building Initiative.
